Eating these carbohydrates raises your blood sugar, which makes it more difficult for your liver to function. High-fructose corn syrup is especially harmful to your liver, and should be avoiding on a liver cleanse.

Processed Foods

Preservatives, additives, and colorings should be avoided while on a liver cleanse diet. Because processed foods include these added ingredients, avoiding all processed foods is essential. In addition, many processed foods include trans-fats, or hydrogenated oils, such as margarine. Trans-fats can sabotage your liver cleanse, adding unnecessary waste for your liver to dispose of.

Other Foods to Avoid on the Liver Cleansing Diet

While on the liver cleansing diet, avoid eating shellfish or other fish with high levels of mercury, such as swordfish and tuna. Also stay away from processed meats, such as deli or hot dogs, which can place an unwanted burden on your liver due to nitrites and other preservatives.

Foods to Eat on a Liver Cleansing Diet

So what should you eat on a liver cleansing diet? Fruits and vegetables, as well as whole grains, should be staples of your diet. Include at least one naturally crunchy raw fruit or vegetable in every meal. Make sure to get enough fiber, which can clean out your system as well. For proteins in your diet, focus on beans, nuts, and fish that are low in mercury. You can eat some meat or poultry, but make sure not to cook them at an extremely high temperature (such as by grilling or frying them), which can create several harmful chemicals for your liver to combat. Make sure that you include enough healthy fats in your diet as well, such as omega 3 fish oils and the healthier of the omega 6 oils. In general, focus on eating foods that are good for your liver and avoiding those that produce wastes for your liver to deal with.
