Body Types

Are you an apple? Maybe a pear, or a ruler? Perhaps an hourglass. All these terms used to describe different body types can be a little confusing. What do they mean and how on earth do you figure out which body type refers to you?

Pear

Pear body types tend to carry extra weight in the hips and thighs while maintaining a smaller waist, arms, shoulders, and chest. This is a very common body type.

Apple

Apples tend to carry extra weight around the middle. Their trouble areas are the waist and stomach, and they have a larger chest. Legs, butt, and arms are smaller in comparison. This body type is considered to be more prone to health problems like heart attacks, high blood pressure, and diabetes. So it’s important for apple body types to reduce their waist to hip ratio by losing belly fat.

The pear and apple are the main female body types, and some calculations group every woman into one of the two body types. A waist to hip ratio of less than 0.8 makes you a pear, while greater than 0.8 means you’re an apple. Still, there are some body type measurements that consider the hourglass and ruler to be different body types.

Ruler

The ruler type is straight up and down, with little curves. Small hips, undefined waist, and small chest define the ruler.

Hourglass

The hourglass has a smaller waist with a larger chest and hips. This is thought to be the ideal woman’s body type.

How easily do you put on weight?

Another way to classify your body type depends on how easily you can gain weight or lose weight or muscle. The body types are ectomorph, mesomorph, and endomorph.

The ectomorph is a naturally thin person with little curves. A person with this body type will have trouble gaining weight and building muscle. The mesomorph builds muscle easily and loses weight when needed without much trouble. This is a very athletic body type. The endomorph carries excess fat and has trouble losing weight. The endomorph has a bit of a rounded appearance.
