Protection From the Sun
Vitamin E is essential in helping to protect the skin from sun damage and treat current sun damage. Vitamin E has been found to protect the epidermis layer of the skin from ultra violet sun damage, and has also been found to be effective in increasing the effectiveness of sunscreen. While we are often told to wait 20 minutes after putting on sunscreen before entering the water, it appears that this rule is especially important for maximal vitamin E absorption. In order to allow vitamin E to soak fully into the epidermis layer of the skin, make sure to allow ample time between application of sunscreen and swimming. However, protection against the sun’s harmful rays is only one answer to the question of: “is vitamin E good for skin?”

These days, more and more people are interested in living longer–and looking younger while they do it. For individuals who want to maintain their youthful appearance, vitamin E may be the charm. Many pharmaceutical and beauty companies have already begun placing vitamin E into their lotions, creams, moisturizers, and other skin care products due to the ability of vitamin E to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. In addition to these cosmetic benefits, it appears vitamin E has also been found to contain several important antioxidants that are effective in removing free radicals, which have been found to promote skin aging, from the body. Finally, several companies have begun to promote the supplemental use of vitamin E for optimal skin care.
Using Vitamin E for Scar Treatment
Using vitamin E for the treatment of scars is one of the more controversial claims. While some individuals and companies claim vitamin E can be used in both the treatment and prevention of scars caused by burns or surgeries, there has not been enough research done to substantiate the claim. However, there has been much anecdotal evidence that vitamin E is effective in softening skin, which can lead to the reduced appearance of scars.
Other Skin Benefits of Vitamin E
Some of the other skin benefits of vitamin E include its ability to reduce the appearance of stretch marks and age spots. In addition, research has found vitamin E is effective in strengthening the surface of skin, and helping to keep water trapped within the body. This helps prevent dehydration as well as the development of fine lines and wrinkles. While most of these benefits can be achieved through the daily application of a cream, lotion, or moisturizer that contains vitamin E, supplementation with the vitamin may provide an extra dose. If you do consider using vitamin E in the pill form, try to find a product that is recommended by the USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture), FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Adminstration), or other governing body.
While vitamin E does have some legitimate health benefits for the skin such as providing additional protection against skin damage and fighting anti-oxidants, which cause lines and wrinkles, some of the other benefits are unproven. Use care when selecting a product that contains vitamin E. If using a vitamin E supplement, choose one that has undergone thorough testing and research in order to achieve optimal results.
