Tennis Camp Games and Drills
Tennis Camp Games and Drills
Tennis Camp is a great place to learn tennis skills and techniques while being in an exciting, frenetic environment. Tennis camp games and drills are more fun than games and drills from home because there are others who are at the same learning level wanting to learn tennis skills in a friendly, active, and encouraging atmosphere.
Here are a few tennis camp games and drills that are commonly practiced at tennis camps.
Popcorn Game
This is a fun game to start off the day at tennis camp. It gets players awake, moving, and focused on the tennis balls. The players will not need their rackets for this fun start up game.
As many players as there are on one court, there will be that number of balls minus one on the racket. The coach will “pop” all the balls at one time up in the air over the net. The players are to attempt to catch one ball each and are to bring it back to the coach. The player who does not collect a ball sits on the sideline. The remaining player at the end is the winner.
To keep the players focused and ready for the balls, the coach should send the balls to different areas of the court and at different height levels. The coach should also ensure that each player knows that rough play to get to a ball will not be tolerated.
One - Two - Three Redlight Game
This game is easy to do with a few players and up to many players. It is a fast paced game where players have to concentrate and move quickly.
Place equal players on each side of the court. One person will serve the ball. The player who hits the ball back yells “One”, the second player to hit the ball yells “Two”, and the third player who hits the ball yells “Three”. The very next player who hits the ball does so very fast and yells “red light”.
If a player on the other side of the court is able to hit the ball back, the team they are on gets a point. If a player on the team is unable to hit it back, the team that hit the ball over starts again with a new serve.
Reaction Speed Drill
This drill is perfect for developing reaction speed and quickness to get back into position for ball returns.
Divide players into two equal teams lined up at the center of each baseline. Each team has only one racket.
The drill starts when one side hits the ball to the other side. As soon as the ball is served, the hitter quickly passes the racket to the next person behind them. The hitter then moves to the end of the line. This play continues with each side continuing to pass the racket back to the next person as soon as the ball is hit. If a player sends a ball into the net, or off court, they are removed from their team. The side with players remaining at the end wins the competition.
Focus Drills at Tennis Camp
This drill works on keeping players focused, alert, and watching the ball. Place players on one side of the court and have them all count off number one through however many players they have. They will need to remember what number they are and they are all to stand at the back court.
The coach will be on the other side of the court serving the ball and calling off a random number at the same time. When the coach calls out “three”, the player who is number three will step forward from the back court and attempt to hit the ball back over the net. If number “three” is successful, they are to step back to the back line and continue to wait until their number is called again. If number “three” is unable to return the ball, they are to step to the sideline and are considered “out” until the drill is completed.
