Cutaneous Candidiasis Defined

Cutaneous candidiasis is a skin infection caused by the Candida fungus. This infection bears some resemblance to a rash and can be found in a variety of places on the body. Like most fungi, this fungus prefers warm moist places. That’s why it is often found in the form of diaper rash and rashes in other areas like the armpits. This fungus is a type of yeast. People who are obese and those with diabetes are common carriers of the it.

Treatment

The treatment for this skin infection is usually found in the form of a topical cream. However, some severe cases are treated with oral medication.

One of the most important factors when treating this condition is cleanliness and keeping the area dry. Remember that this fungus lives on the dead skin cells found on the top layer of the skin. Therefore the cleaner the area is, the more dead skin cells are removed, leaving the fungus with a limited supply of food. It also thrives in moist areas which is why the areas need to be kept clean and dry. Obviously this can be a difficult task on some areas of the body. In those types of cases, it’s best to apply some type of drying powder that does not contain perfumes or alcohol as this will irritate the skin even further and promote cutaneous candidiasis.

Prevention

There is no way to place enough stress on hygiene and diet to prevent this fungus from developing and causes the individual problems. It is imperative to keep the skin clean and dry. Areas that are naturally moist should have special attention placed on the hygiene.

Candida is contagious, and since it can also be found under the fingernails, it makes washing the hands even more vital than normal. If a person has Candida under their fingernails and they scratch their skin, it can be transferred to the skin. Keep this in mind if their is a fungal infection under the nails and take precautions to avoid spreading the infection. Never share fingernail or toenail clippers and be sure that the tools used in any professional manicure or pedicures ares properly disinfected.

Since the fungus can be spread, it’s a good idea to stay away from the sharing of clothes or other accessories that lay against the skin. If you do share clothes, make sure to wash them before wearing them as well as before returning them. Remember that practicing good hygiene and healthy eating means frequent cleansing as well as avoiding foods high in yeast.
