Jogging is a great way to get a good workout. It’s good for the cardiovascular system, it’s good for the muscles, and it is a good energy booster. In order get the most out of your jog, it’s important to make sure you do it safely.

Make sure that you are familiar with the route you will be taking. If you will be jogging in an area that’s new to you, go and check it out before you run. Make sure that it’s safe. Look for side walks, or paths that will keep you out of traffic. Look for bumps or cracks that may be in your way. Let someone know where you will be jogging, and how long you expect to be gone.

It’s important for drivers to be able to see you. Run in clothing that is white, or has bright colors. Wear reflective gear if you will be jogging at dawn, night, or dusk. Some athletic shoes have reflective strips on them. It’s also a good idea to wear a reflective vest. If you will be jogging at night, have someone with you.

Bring your identification and cell phone. You can put these in your pocket so that your hands will be free while you jog. If you have an ID bracelet, or tag, it should have an emergency number on it. All of this will be helpful if there should be an emergency.

Stay alert. Many people like to have their head sets on and listen to music when they jog. However, this can be a distraction. It can also reduce your ability to hear what is going around you, such as traffic, or stray dogs. It is important to always be aware of your surroundings.

Be very careful when cars pass by. Always make eye contact with the driver, when you are crossing the street. Don’t cross until the driver looks at you. That way, you will know that the driver actually sees you. Drivers are often distracted by listening to music or talking on the cell phone.

Watch out for other joggers, and people on bikes. If you are coming up behind them, and you are about to pass them, tell them and let them know which side you are on. Always make sure that your path is clear before you change direction.

Bring water with you to reduce your risks for dehydration. This is especially important if your jog will last longer than 30 minutes. You can strap a small bottle to your body. Fluids are definitely a must if you will be running in hot weather. You should also drink a sports drink to replace lost electrolytes and sodium.
