More than Meat and Potatoes

Cracker Barrel restaurants offer hearty selections such as, “Biscuits and Gravy”, “Chicken and Dumplings”, as well as an old favorite-to-many, “Country Fried Steak”, complete with all the trimmings. For those watching their waistlines, this type of food may create a challenge in finding a healthy choice on there scrumptious, yet high caloric menu.

While Cracker Barrel does not offer any nutritional information either on site or via the internet, (which is due to the method of preparation of food items), they do offer healthier alternatives. With items such as fresh fruit, fat-free salad dressings, sugar free syrups, and even a low carbohydrate menu.

The most fattening and highest in calories by far that I came across was the “Home-style Chicken”, which comes with two large chicken breasts. This entree contains 1420 calories and 28 grams of fat! For some people this could be their meal for the entire day’s consumption.

A Healthy Dining Experience

For those individuals looking for healthier substitutions, there are ways of cutting the calories and fat and still be able to share in the dining experience.

For many meals you can make substitutions: ask for egg substitute or egg whites instead of whole eggs. Pair it with wheat toast (without butter) or oatmeal. Instead of the traditional pork sausage, Cracker Barrel offers turkey sausage. Opt for fruit instead of fries, and ask for dressings on the side (use sparingly). Chicken and fish can be grilled upon request, as well as ordering chicken boiled on any of the Country Dinners.

Since Cracker Barrel prides themselves on making their food from scratch daily, many items can be altered upon ordering. Overall, this restaurant offers a relaxed atmosphere, with hearty dining, and all at an affordable price.
