It is very important to follow through with shin splints treatment. Failure to do so could cause the condition to worsen, or lead to serious problems. Shin splints usually affect athletes. However, they can affect non-athletes too.

If someone suspects that they are suffering from shin splints, it is important to see a physician so that treatment can begin immediately. The physician will want to examine both shins. He or she may order an x-ray, bone scan or an MRI to determine the extent of the injuries.

What is the Treatment for Shin Splints?

If the physician has determined you are suffering from shin splints, then he or she will recommend treatment. It is important to note that regardless of the cause of the injury, the recommended treatment is usually the same or similar. It is also important to follow the instructions for the length of time to prevent repeat injury. The following is a list of what your doctor might recommend for you.

The patient may be prescribed anti-inflammatory or pain medications. Depending on severity of the pain or swelling, the doctor may recommend over-the-counter medications as well. Aspirin and ibuprofen will help with swelling and pain. However, medications may have side effects, so only use them as recommended by your doctor.

  • Ice packs for the shin area will reduce swelling and pain. For the first two or three days for 20 to 30 minutes every 3 to 4 hours is usually, the recommendation.
  • Special exercises increase the strength of the muscles in the affected area. Sometimes, a physician may recommend alternative exercises such as swimming or other various low impact activities. It will be important not to overdo so the healing process can occur.
  • New shoes, and or insoles can bring comfort to the injury. This would change the step pattern to prevent further aggravation of the injury. This would act like a cushion so the impact would be less intense.
  • Massage therapy may be applied to stimulate the area. This would help the blood flow and promote healing. The doctors may have the patient do this at home on their own. However, if the injury is more severe, the doctor may recommend a massage therapist.
  • The physician may recommend a bandage wrapped or neoprene sleeve during the shin splints treatment to help support the injured area. This treatment would also help keep the legs warm.
  • In very rare cases, surgery may be necessary to repair the injured area.

How can Shin Splints be Prevented?

Shin splints can be prevented by stretching and warming up before the athletic activity begins. This would allow the blood flow to warm-up the muscles in the area. It is always a good idea to avoid over-exertion and to wear shoes that provide proper foot support. By taking preventative measures, you can avoid the painful experience that shin splints cause, and avoid the need for treatment as well.
