Eyebright Herb Side Effects

The eyebright herb can produce side effects in some patients. Patients using topical eyebright may experience eye pressure changes, itchiness, watery eyes, increased sensitivity to light, vision changes, or swollen eyelids. Patients using oral eyebright may experience nausea, confusion and sweating. If any of these side effects occur, it is important that the patient contact their physician. Other side effects of eyebright that most often warrant immediate medical attention include headache, confusion, significant increase in sensitivity to light, significant vision changes, severe eye pressure, significant itching, and swollen, red eyes.

Eyebright Safety

Patient’s using eyebright herb for sore eyes that have had cataract removal, wear contacts, have had laser eye surgery, have corneal implants or have had other eye procedures should only use the eyebright herb under close doctor supervision. It is not known whether taking the eyebright herb to alleviate cold and flu symptoms is safe for pregnant women.
