Many people suffer from dry skin. Some conditions can be mild (rough, itchy skin) or more severe (cracked, scaly skin). Many factors can lead to dry skin, including aging, poor diet, dehydration, and environmental factors.

The following supplements can help in the treatment and prevention of dry skin.

Supplements for Dry Skin - Omega 3 Fatty Acids

All cells in the body have cell-walls (miniature barriers) to separate each cell. Fats, including omega 3 fatty acids, are the most important part of cell-walls. Fats prevent water from easily escaping through the barrier. When there is excessive water loss, cells become dehydrated and die and this results in dry skin.

The body does not manufacture omega 3 fatty acids and many people do not include enough in their diet. Foods high in omega 3 fatty acids include certain fish (like salmon), flaxseed, and walnuts. If you are suffering from dry skin, it would be wise to include these foods in your diet (fish contains mercury so you do not want to include large amounts) plus take an omega 3 fatty acid supplement. It is best to choose omega 3 fish oil supplements with DHA (the most important fat in omega 3).

Taking an omega 3 fatty acid supplement repairs dry skin but can take about 4 weeks to see results.

Supplements for Dry Skin - Vitamins

Vitamin A, C, and E

All 3 vitamins are powerful antioxidants that prevent and repair skin cells from damage by free radicals. They protect and strengthen the skin’s surface. Vitamin A maintains skin integrity, vitamin C is required for the production of collagen, and vitamin E keeps the skin hydrated by preserving the balance of fats.

Vitamin A repairs dry skin if taken in reasonable amounts but it can also cause dry skin if large amounts are taken.

Riboflavin (Vitamin B2)

Riboflavin prepares fatty acids for breakdown and speeds up the production of antioxidants. A deficiency in riboflavin can cause severe skin problems, including painful cracks at the corners of the mouth.

Other B vitamins, zinc, copper, L-cysteine, and selenium also repairs dry skin.

Food sources are preferred but if you do take supplements for dry skin, consult with your doctor first if you are pregnant, are breastfeeding, are taking medications, or have a medical condition.
