Linden Flower

Linden trees (Tilia) are native in eastern North America, Europe, and Asia. They are tall trees (reaching as high as 130 feet) with sturdy trunks and small, fragrant flowers. In Europe, linden flower tea has been used for centuries as a herbal remedy to treat many ailments and is still popular today.

Health Benefits of Linden Flower Tea

Tilia cordata (one species of linden trees) is said to be best for medicinal purposes because it has a higher concentration of active ingredients.

Active ingredients in linden flowers include volatile oils, flavonoids (acts as antioxidants), mucilaginous constituents (reduces inflammation), and tannins (acts as an astringent).

Linden flower is best known for reducing a high fever. It is said that the sun’s rays are stored in the blooms of the linden tree and when someone drinks a hot cup of linden flower tea, the sun’s warmth is instilled in the body, causing one to break out in a sweat. By sweating, the body cools down and the fever is reduced.

Linden flower tea is also effective in treating colds, coughs, and stuffy noses. Its high content of fiber mucilage calms respiratory passages and promotes healing of the airways.

Other benefits of linden flower tea include:

  • reducing stress and anxiety
  • treating stomach pains
  • relieving gas
  • increasing appetite
  • relieving insomnia

Preparing Linden Flower Tea

Pour 1 cup of boiling water over 1 teaspoon of dried linden flowers, cover, steep for 10 minutes, and strain.

To treat a fever with linden flower tea, drink it as hot as you can (without burning yourself) 3 times a day. After drinking the tea, dress warmly and lie in bed for at least 30 minutes to help break the fever.

For a relaxing bath to calm nerves, boil 3 handfuls of linden flowers in 1 quart of water, strain, and pour in bath water. This is a great way to calm babies and children before bedtime.
