The Goldenrod Plant

The goldenrod plant is a member of the daisy family and native to Europe and Asia. It grows wild in the woods and on hillsides in North America. The plant can be gathered in July and August. You can use any part of the plant that is above ground. The goldenrod plant contains saponins which are anti-inflammatory and antifungal and favonoids which are antioxidants and is tissue strengthening.

The Benefits of Goldenrod

Goldenrod is an effective natural remedy for toothaches, diarrhea, wounds, kidney disorders such as nephritis which is an inflammation of the kidneys, cystitis and bladder stones. The saponins make it helpful for yeast infections and thrush and its anti-inflammatory properties are used for hemorrhoids, sore throats, bleeding gums and sinus congestion. It can be used externally as first aid for wounds.

How To Use Goldenrod

A goldenrod tincture can be used to remedy a yeast infection by taking 20-40 drops up to four times a day. Use this for two weeks and then stop for three days. Repeat this if necessary. A wonderful sitz bath can be made for the relief of hemorrhoids by pouring two cups of boiling water over a quarter cup of the dried herb. Allow this to steep for fifteen minutes and then strain. Add this to a five gallon tub of hot water twice a day for three days.Cystitis can be remedied by pouring one cup of boiling water over two teaspoons of the dried herb and allowing to steep for ten minutes. Strain and drink this tea four times a day, reducing it as the symptoms go away. For an added boost that is also rich in vitamin C, make a blend of one ounce of goldenrod, three quarters of an ounce of dandelion, three quarters of an ounce of rose hips and three quarters of an ounce of juniper berries.
