The Truth About Trail Mix

I love trail mix! To me, it is the perfect snack. Filled with fabulous vitamins and minerals, trail mix offers an easy, tasty treat virtually anytime and anyplace. And yet, finding the perfect trail mix can be challenging at best, and we always seem to end up with a trail mix that has some or even most of what we like…but not all. We pick out the things we don’t like, or just eat them anyway, all the while not really enjoying the full compliment of flavor combinations as much as we wanted to, and ultimately, being not quite completely satisfied. We may even simply toss the pieces we don’t like, or even the entire package, wasteful and uneconomical, to say the least!

It doesn’t have to be this way. Now we can all enjoy the trail mix we love, with flavors we crave and nutrition we need…and even save some money in the process!

Where To Begin!

When it comes to creating the perfect trail mix, keep the following in mind:

  • know what you like and know what you crave
  • know what others in your family like and crave, if you are making trail mix for multiple people
  • know how much time you have to dedicate to creating the perfect trail mix
  • be aware of storage ability for your trail mix, ie: lunch boxes, briefcases, kitchen counters, even your car!

Step Two: Questions answered

Understanding the basics of what you like, who will be enjoying your fabulous trail mix as well as storage, is fundamental in ensuring the best mix, least waste and optimum nutrition for all who enjoy it. This is because, when creating your own mix, you can create a base with the most popular items, and then build upon this base for specific family members, or moods.

Do you enjoy dried fruit, such as raisins, pineapple and banana, consider purchasing a food dehydrator. Although you have an initial monetary outlay, you will save so much more in the long run with regard to removal of preservatives and additives, and increased nutritional value …not to mention flavor!

Planning on keeping some in your car? Be sure to use an airtight container and avoid any ingredients that might melt in the heat.

Simple Trail Mix Beginnings

Whether you have always enjoyed trail mix, or are interested in trying something new, this simple starter is an easy, and delicious way to begin enjoying trail mix, just the way you like it!

Base:

Almonds - lightly salted - offering protein, biotin, loads of calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, loads of potassium, and glutamic acid.

Dried cranberries - offering vitamin A, and a natural sweetness

Chocolate or Carob Chips: Chocolate offers protein and fiber as well as a wonderful way to satisfy the needs of those who love chocolate! Carob chips offer a tart flavor and are a wonderful compliment to the sweetness of the dried cranberries and crunchy almonds. They contain fiber and are simply loaded with potassium. Another plus to carob chips is they are safe for your dog, unlike chocolate, which is toxic.

How to make: Simply place 2 parts almonds with 2 parts dried cranberries and 1 part chocolate chips. Then just add your favorite taste sensations, pumpkin seeds, dried bananas, sunflower seeds, dried pineapple, pretzels pieces, even air dried popcorn or non-sugary breakfast cereal, and enjoy! Store your trail mix in an airtight container.

When beginning with this base, you can have each family member create his or her own favorite trail mix recipe. Fun for the entire family and no more waste!

Now you can enjoy homemade goodness and have fun in the process. Trail mix offers a fabulous nutritious snack virtually anytime, and anyplace. Just begin with a base and build from there and in no time, you’ll be enjoying flavor sensations that satisfy everyone in your family, with no waste.
