Omega-3 fatty acids are becoming a crucial component for health and disease prevention. While clinical studies examine and compile evidence of the benefits of omega-3, it appears that omega-3 may alleviate whatever ales you.

You would be hard pressed to find a disorder that would not be eased by a healthy diet. Omaga-3 fatty acids are essential to health, and have been proven to help treat and prevent a host of diseases. Here we will focus on just a few.

Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimer’s disease is a debilitating mental disorder that is both progressive, and fatal. Symptoms include loss of memory, and decrease in cognitive function. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, as many as 5 million Americans are living with the disease. Although there is no known cure for the disease, studies suggest that an increased intake of omega-3 fatty acids may lower the risk.

ADHD

Among the most popular prescriptions for treating ADHD are stimulant drugs called Adderall and Ritalin. These drugs have many side effects, some of which can be extremely dangerous. Such side effects include loss of appetite, insomnia, and heart problems.

Those opting for alternatives to the possible risky drugs can include omega-3 as a treatment. It is thought that children with ADHD may have low levels of essential fatty acids. Children supplementing with omega-3 may experience decreased symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity.

Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar Disorder is a form of depression that is characterized by manic episodes, as well as depressed phases. Symptoms include impulsive behavior, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, and extreme mood swings. Bipolar Disorder is thought to stem from areas in the brain that affect mood. Treatments for Bipolar Disorder typically include a mixture of prescription drugs such as Abilify, Depakote, Zoloft, and Prozac. Significant side effects have been known to arise among those prescribed these powerful drugs. Research, however, indicates that since omega- 3 helps maintain healthy brain functioning, supplementing with these fatty acids may be a natural and effective alternative.

Burns

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, essential fatty acids may be used to promote wound healing in burn victims. These acids aid in reducing inflammation, and may promote a healthy balance of proteins in the body (as indicated in animal research). Protein balance is an important part of recovery for those who have sustained burn injuries.

Cancer

Colon cancer, breast cancer, and prostate cancer are among the diseases that may be prevented and treated with essential fatty acids. Consuming significant amounts of foods rich in omega- 3 may reduce the risks of colon cancer, as evidenced in the Eskimo population. Studies done on animals also indicate that omega-3 fatty acids may prevent the deterioration of colon cancer. In women, the instance of developing breast cancer may be lessened with the regular consumption of foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids. In men, the same holds true for prostate cancer. In addition, these cancers may be inhibited by the consumption of omega-3.
