Quick and Effective Skin Tags Home Remedy
Skin tags are small tabs of skin with narrow stalks that grow in the regions of underarms, neck and among body folds. They are non-cancerous growths and your only concern should be that they are unsightly.
What causes Skin Tags?
Heredity
If skin tags run in the family, then the chances of children contracting the condition is high. Skin tags usually appear during middle age. However, there have been cases where skin tags have been spotted on babies. If both parents have skin tags then the chances of the baby developing it increases dramatically.
Obesity
Obese people seem to contract skin tags easily than those who are not. They develop skin tags in their armpits, neck, groins and even eyelids. Obese people are more prone to skin rubbing against skin which is said to be the cause of skin tags.
Pregnancy
Pregnant women contract skin tags more easily compared to those who are not. Skin tags, more often than not develop under their breasts, armpits and necks. Skin tags during pregnancy is only a temporary condition. The tags usually disappear after childbirth.
Treatment
Skin tags as has been mentioned earlier, does not affect the health in any way. However, they could cause irritation when they come into contact with clothes and rub against them.
Currently, the methods of treatment available are cynotheraphy and cauterizing. The former involves freezing the tags with liquid nitrogen to kill the tag cells and make them fall off. Cauterizing involves the use of heat in place of freezing
Treatment is usually expensive because in most cases a local anaesthetic has to be used. Most health insurance schemes don’t cover the removal of skin tags. If you find yourself unable to seek the above treatment, worry not because there are effective home remedies for skin tags.
Home Remedies
Most of the remedies discussed below can be carried out easily and inexpensively with items available in your kitchen.
Apple Cider Vinegar
The first remedy is a simple one. You soak a paper towel with apple cider vinegar and apply it on the skin tag. The skin tag will appear swollen and discolored. It would just be a matter of time before the tag falls off. Alternatively, you could soak a cotton ball with apple cider vinegar, press it on the tag and secure the cotton ball with a bandage and leave it overnight.
String
You can also tie a string (dental floss will do as well) around a tag and leave it there. This will cut off blood supply to the tag and it won’t be long before the tag falls off.
Potato
Another effective skin tags home remedy requires nothing more than a potato. Cut a hole in the potato about the size of the tag. Press the potato on the tag and move it in a circular motion for about twenty to thirty minutes. Do this once in the morning and once at night.
Garlic
Here’s another kitchen remedy for tags. It involves the use of garlic. All you have to do is rub crushed garlic on to the tag twice to thrice daily. Better still, cover the tag with mashed garlic and wrap a bandage around it and keep it there overnight. It will not be long before you get rid of the tag.
Castor Oil Paste
Finally, you can make a thick paste by mixing castor oil with baking soda. Apply some on the tag and keep it wrapped with a bandage. Do this at least thrice a day. It could take up to two weeks to rid a tag.
Caution
The methods recommended above use harmless, food items. With these methods, it may take a while to get the tags removed. Some of you, wanting a faster method, may be tempted to use a pair of scissors or a nail clipper to snip off skin tags. If you’re doing so, make sure they are sterilized so that you don’t end up with an infection. This method would involve bleeding and you would need to bandage the wound with an antiseptic preparation to prevent infection and speed up healing.
Also if you’re removing skin tags near sensitive body parts like the eyes, you’re not advised to go it alone. Seek the advice of a qualified health practitioner, especially if you’re planning to use a caustic agent.
Pregnant women, to be on the safe side, should always consult a doctor before attempting removal of skin tags.
