Which Oils go Together?

Creating essential oil blends is something that people who are interested in holistic healing have done for hundreds of years. Essential oils are used for many health related purposes, including stress reduction, help with sinus problems and even muscle pain. Since each essential oil is used for different purposes, it is important to learn a little bit about each one before you go about blending them together. Make sure that you have a basic understanding of essential oils before you start exploring the process of creating blends.

Most oils fit into one of the six following groups.

  • Spicy
  • Woody
  • Floral
  • Green
  • Citrus
  • Resinous

One of the most important things that you need to know about blending essential oils is that as a beginner, you should always stay within the same grouping of oils. For instance, you should blend floral oils with other floral oils for the best and most aromatic results. A blending of lavender and jasmine would make a very pleasing floral scent. Once you have learned to blend scents from the same group, you can begin to experiment with adding in other scents.

Blending Aromatic Groups

Experimentation is the key to knowing which essential oils go well together. Essential oils are typically one of three “notes”. Top notes are fresh and energizing. Middle notes are strong and very potent. Low notes are heavy and rich. For the best results, use one oil of each note when creating your blend. Here are a few examples of each note.

High:

  • Basil
  • Cinnamon
  • Lemongrass
  • Spearmint
  • Orange

Middle:

  • Chamomile
  • Bay
  • Lavender
  • Rosemary
  • Tea Tree

Low:

  • Clove
  • Jasmine
  • Ginger
  • Rose
  • Vanilla

By blending together 3 oils that are three different notes, you can get a full, long lasting aromatic oil blend that works well together.

Blending Instructions

The best way to try out some oil blends is to place a drop of each oil onto a cotton swab and then drop the three cotton swabs together in a jar. When you sniff the jar, you will be able to tell what the blend will smell like. Once you have experimented enough to find a great blend, you can go ahead and mix it together.

To mix a blend of oils, you will need to use a ratio of 3:2:1. This means that for every 3 drops of the high note, you will use 2 drops of the middle note and one drop of the low note.

Be sure to experiment with lots of mixtures before deciding on which one you love. After all, essential oils can be expensive and you don’t want to waste money by creating a blend that you don’t like. Try out the blends on the cotton balls and you should have no problem creating essential oil blends that you love and can’t wait to create.
