Learn About the Skin Benefits of Olive Oil and Develop Your Own Natural Beauty Products
Almond oil is extracted from the almond. There are two types of almonds (sweet and bitter). Sweet almonds are the type that can be eaten because they do not contain a toxic substance like bitter almonds. Sweet and bitter almonds are used to make oil (the toxic substance is removed from the bitter ones during the process). Both oils are often used as a substitute for olive oil. However, the oil from sweet almonds absorb more easily into the skin. Sweet almond oil is a popular carrier oil in aromatherapy.
Skin Benefits of Almond Oil
Almond oil is packed with unsaturated fats (mostly monounsaturated fats) and vitamin E; powerful nutrients that greatly benefit skin health. Fats are needed for healthy cell membranes and vitamin E is a strong antioxidant that protects cells from free radical damage. Almond oil can help skin problems when taken internally or used externally.
Almond oil is not as greasy as most oils and, when applied topically, it does not clog up pores. It works well with all types of skin but is especially helpful for dry and irritated skin. It helps hold in moisture, keeping the skin looking young and healthy. It can help reduce fine wrinkles and erase dark circles under the eyes. It can also help relieve itching and soothe inflammation.
Besides having skin benefits, almond oil (if taken internally) can also help lower “bad” cholesterol and improve the immune system. Some research suggests it possesses anti-cancer properties.
Using Almond Oil on the Skin
When getting skin benefits of almond oil, first you should wash the area you wish to apply it. Afterwards, apply a couple of drops or more of pure almond oil to your skin (two drops are normally sufficient for the face), wet your hands with warm water, and gently massage the oil into your skin.
Recipes
For every day skin care
Combine 3 tablespoons of sweet almond oil, 1 teaspoon of evening primrose oil, 3 drops of rose essential oil, and 2 drops of neroli oil. Mix well. Store in a dark bottle (with a dropper top) and shake well before each use. This will keep for about six months.
Facial mask (for dry skin)
Mix 1 beaten egg and 1 teaspoon of sweet almond oil thoroughly. Apply to your face, leave it on for 10-15 minutes, and rinse off with cold water.
For babies
Instead of using moist baby wipes, add a few drops of sweet almond oil to a soft tissue. Use as you would a baby wipe.
