Homemade Lip Balms

Making your own homemade lip balms can be a rewarding and gratifying process. You can make the lip balm exactly as you would like, using the scents and flavors that you prefer. It’s also fun to make lip balm as a gift for friends and family.Your lip balm will keep your lips moisturized and make you feel pretty at the same time.

Making your own lip balm products is also a great activity for a mother and daughter to share together. It can be done in a short amount of time and you will both have fun and be able to use what you make.

Basic Homemade Lip Balm Recipe

With this recipe, you can make about a 1/2 ounce of lip balm. This is about the same amount that would come in a small container from a department store. You can easily store your lip balm in small plastic containers that you can purchase at discount retailers. You will be adding the essential oil of your choice to this recipe, so think about what kind of scent you would like for your lip balm to have and go with an oil that will help you to achieve that scent. If you like a minty scent, you can use peppermint essential oil. If you prefer your lip balm to smell like lavender, you can use lavender essential oil.

Ingredients

  • Grated unbleached beeswax - 3 teaspoons
  • Sunflower oil - 5 teaspoons
  • Essential oil - 6 to 7 drops
  • Honey - 1 teaspoon

Preparation

Using a double boiler, melt the beeswax and sunflower oil. Stir while melting. Remove the pot from the heat and add in your essential oil and honey. Mix well. Pour the mixture into your container and let it sit for at least 20 minutes.

Tips

To add a little color into your lip balm, you can shave just a small amount of lipstick off of a tube that you like and mix it into the gloss right before you pour it into the container. This is an easy way to get the color you want, along with a nice moisturizing feel.

Pour your lip balm from the boiler into a glass. Then use a small sized funnel to get the lip balm from the glass into the container. This will help you to be able to transfer your lip balm without spilling it.

Save old lip balm pots and containers to wash and reuse for making your own homemade lip balm. This is a great way to recycle and use materials that you already have to make great gifts for friends and family.

To make your lip balm a little shinier, use 2 teaspoons of wax and 8 teaspoons of sunflower oil.
