Vitamin B12 Patch Side Effects
The vitamin B12 patch is prescribed to treat pernicious anemia, vitamin B12 deficiency and the diseases it causes. The patch is applied directly to the skin either alone or with avocado oil for patients with eczema or psoriasis to help prevent further skin irritation. Vitamin B12 patch side effects can occur and will depend on the patient.
Uses of the Vitamin B12 Patch
There are several other uses for this patch. Some of these uses have been proven effective while other still require further research and testing. This vitamin patch may be beneficial in treating the following conditions:
- Alzheimer’s disease and memory loss
- Skin infections
- Boosting mood and energy
- Cervical cancer prevention (may also be effective in preventing other cancers)
- Boosting concentration
- Vitiligo
- Boosting the immune system
- Allergies and asthma
- Slowing the aging process
- Inflammatory bowel disease
- Heart disease

- Decreasing homocysteine levels
- Swollen tendons
- Male infertility
- Weak bones

For all conditions, but skin conditions, this patch will simply be applied directly to the skin. If the patient has any type of skin condition the patch will be applied to the skin along with avocado oil. Avocado oil will help to reduce further irritation or skin breakouts. For some skin conditions, such as psoriasis and eczema, the avocado oil may also be beneficial in helping to alleviate the symptoms of the skin condition.
Side Effects
As with all medications and supplements vitamin B12 side effects can occur. These include diarrhea, itching, blood clots, serious allergic reactions, skin reactions at the application site, panic attacks and anxiety, skin rash, heart palpitations, swollen skin, insomnia, chest pain, and breathing problems. However, vitamin B12 side effects are generally rare.
Vitamin B12 Patch Drug Interactions
Patients who are using a vitamin B12 patch and taking other medications may be a risk for drug interactions. The drugs that may interact include:
- Chloramphenicol: A bacteriostatic antibiotic prescribed to treat certain bacterial infections.
- Proton pump inhibitors: Prescribed to treat peptic ulcer disease and gastroesophageal reflux disease.
- H2 receptor antagonists: Prescribed to treat peptic ulcer disease.
- Metformin: Classified as a hypoglycemic medication prescribed to treat diabetes.
Some of these medications can decrease or increase how much vitamin B12 the body absorbs resulting in deficiency or toxicity (toxicity
is rare). Some will interfere with the red blood cells’ response to vitamin B12 supplementation. Other adverse interactions can include increased bacterial growth.
