Dry scalp may be caused by a multitude of factors. The most common causes of dry scalp could be related to weather, allergies, shampoos, conditioners, ans styling products. Remedies for dry scalp are available. There are home remedies and also dermatologist recommended dry scalp treatments. Usually a combination of gentle scalp massage and the use of moisturizing shampoos, conditioners, and treatment are good choices for mild dry scalp.

What Remedies for Dry Scalp are Available?

Changes in the hair cleaning routine may be enough to cause a mild case of dry scalp. There is the mistaken perception that cleaning more frequently will get rid of your dry scalp problem. Instead, too frequent shampooing can work the other way: it can make your scalp dryer because it strips the scalp of its natural oils. Therefore, you should not shampoo more often. Also, try more gentle shampoos and use those that contain moisturizing agents. The same applies for conditioners.

Another factor that may be related to flaking and scalp dryness is the use of hot water during hair cleaning. Heat may irritate scalp skin and dry it out. Long hot showers may have an adverse effect on dry scalp (also on the body’s skin). Switch to warmer showers. If possible rinse your hair with cold water (as much as you can take). Also, do not over use hair dryers since the hot air can worsen a dry scalp problem.

One of the most recommended home remedies for dry scalp is massaging. A gentle daily (or twice a day) massage of your scalp increases the blood circulation and restores the natural skin oil production. More blood irrigation of your scalp skin means more nutrition for scalp cells and more efficient cell metabolism, thus making massaging a simple but powerful remedy for dry scalp.

Another easy and powerful method for treating a dry scalp is the use of oils. There are plenty of oils at local drugstores or hair saloons. The way to do it is very simple. Take the oil and rub it on the scalp. Then, wrap the head with a towel and let it sit there for 15-20 minutes. Let it act. Afterwards, clean your hair with shampoo and a conditioner and remember to use cold water (lukewarm if too sensitive to cold water). Some people suggest the use of natural oils such as olive oil or a paste made from avocados. These natural oils may have the additional benefit of having anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.

Excessive heat and light during the summer is seen as a possible cause of dry scalp, thus a general recommendation is to reduce exposure to your head, especially on summer days when heat is on the rise. It is recommended to use a hat during summers to avoid dry scalp.

For strong cases of dry scalp there may be the need to consult with a doctor. It may be that the person has a poorly understood condition called seborrhoeic dermatitis which may need medical attention. Specific formulated shampoos, cleansers or topical creams may be needed.
