Swine Flu Facts
According to the Centers for Disease Control, (CDC) the following symptoms are associated with Novel H1N1 infection (swine flu): fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. In addition, a significant number of people also have reported nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. https://www.cdc.gov/H1N1Flu/
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) https://www.who.int/csr/don/2009_05_11/en/index.html as of May 12, there have been 2,532 cases of the swine flu in the US with only 3 deaths. So, rest assured, just because a person gets the sickness, they are not sure to die.
Swine Flu Treatments
There are some natural swine flu treatments available that may help to reduce the length and duration of the sickness. Please know that none of these supplements will cure the flu. Always check first with your physician before taking any natural supplements or trying to cure a sickness. At the first sign of the flu you may want to try the following remedies in order to give your immune system the extra boost it needs:
Oscillococcinum is a homeopathic remedy for flu-like symptoms. According to the package you should begin taking this remedy at the first sign of the flu. According to the manufacturer ‘Oscillococcinum has been shown in clinical trials to help reduce the severity and shorten the duration of flu symptoms.
Oscillococcinum works rapidly, with 63 percent of patients showing “complete resolution" or “clear improvement” at 48 hours. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial, the recovery rate within 48 hours of treatment was significantly greater in the group that received the active drug than in the placebo group.’ https://www.oscillo.com/about-oscillo/default.html
Sambucus is an antiviral supplement made with black elderberry extract (Sambucus Nigra). Traditionally this herb is used to help support the immune system and has antiviral properties. It comes in a liquid form and is available at your local health food store.
Colloidal Silver is anti-viral, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial. There are no known side effects from colloidal silver and the doses are very small amounts of liquid which make it possible to take this even when nauseous.
L-Glutamine is recommended as an immune booster and should be taken on an empty stomach. This is a great supplement to take at the very first sign of sickness.
Vitamin C has been known to shorten the duration and severity of viral infections. According to Dr. Leo Galland, MD it is safe for children ages 5 - 10 to take up to 2,000mg per day and it is safe for adults to take 1,000 - 3,000 mg per hour. If your stools become loose, you will know that you have taken as much as your body can absorb for that day. Discontinue use until the following day. My favorite brand of vitamin C is Solaray Super Bio C.
Get a colonic. A colonic will flush out your entire colon. Try to find a colon therapist who uses the gravity or Wood method. These are the only types of colonics that have been recommended to me by the experts.
If you do not have an appetite do not eat. Especially if you have a fever, eating is counter productive. The less you eat, the more your body can rid itself of the sickness. Digestion takes a lot of energy and when you are sick you want to give your body every bit of energy possible to heal itself. Think of your body being at war. It needs energy to fight. Eating when sick does not give your body energy, it uses up your energy!
Get plenty of rest. If you are tired, the worst thing you can possibly do is wear yourself out. Your body heals itself when you sleep and sleep is the single most important step you can take to get well.
Don’t try to get rid of your fever unless it goes above a temperature that you are not comfortable with. Check with your naturopath or doctor about this. In my family, the rule of thumb is that a fever is necessary for the body in order to kill off the virus. A fever actually releases the enzymes necessary to kill the unwanted sickness. The only time I would give my own family anything for a fever is if they were just miserable. A natural way to help bring a fever down or make a headache go away is to get a pair of cotton socks. Wet them in cold tap water and wring them out. Put them on the feet, then put dry, wool socks over the cotton socks. This will cause a rush of blood to the feet in order to warm the feet and will take pressure off of the head and will help cool the body in the case of a fever. This works great for teething pain as well! Again, always check with your naturopath or physician for your particular case.
Oil of oregano is known to have powerful anti-viral effects. Buy a reputable brand and follow the directions on the package.
Drink a tea made of fresh ginger, fresh lemon juice and stevia. Simply buy fresh ginger and cut some up in pieces and boil for 20 minutes. Let cool a bit and then add fresh lemon juice to taste. The lemons have an extra punch of vitamin C while the ginger is said to help with chills and a sore throat.
There is a new product called “Flu Fly” that is said to be a powerful anti-viral, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial agent. It is available through www.rawvegansource.com or straight from the maker, “Transition Nutrition” at 800-788-4818.
