What Causes Bruises

Is that unsightly blue blotch on your leg stopping you from slipping into your favorite skirt? Bumps and bruises are caused when the impact of injury from a blunt object is severe enough to rupture the delicate blood vessels underneath the skin thus causing leakage of blood into the surrounding tissue. Most people would advise you to leave a bruise alone and let it take its own course towards healing, but why put up with the pain and the unpleasant sight when you can get rid of it much sooner? There are a whole lot of home remedies that can help you heal bruises naturally!

Preventing and Minimizing Discoloration

When you get hurt, apply an ice-pack on the injured area as soon as possible. Chilling the area will minimize the leakage of blood into the surrounding tissue and the bruise will fade faster. Take care however, not to over-freeze the area. Don’t apply an ice pack for anymore that ten minutes on the same spot and allow at least twenty minutes between two sessions. Keep an instant ice-pack handy by freezing water mixed with surgical spirit (in 1: 6 ratio) in a plastic zip-lock bag. This will give you some nice ice-slush which can be applied comfortably to any part of the body.

Wrapping an elastic bandage also prevents excessive internal bleeding and the bruise will not end up quite as severe.

The idea is to minimize blood flow to the affected area. If you happen to be outdoors with no access to ice-packs and bandages, simply position the injured body part in a way that blood is drawn away from it due to gravitational force. This will help the body to heal bruises naturally.

Speeding Up the Fading Process

After applying cold treatment to the bruise for about a day, you may switch to applying heat to boost up blood circulation which will clear away the pooled blood. Electric heating pads, hot water bottles and microwavable heat packs are good, mess-free options.

Reducing Inflammation

· A warn concoction of dried comfrey leaves can be applied as it possesses anti-inflammatory properties and also promoted cell-regeneration. If comfrey leaves are hard to find, make do with vinegar or Witch hazel.

· Arnica gel helps combat inflammation and swelling and so does St John’s wort oil.

· Hirudoid ointment is known to check inflammation and speed up the absorption of pooled blood.
