Health Benefits and Medicinal Uses of Guggul
Introduction
Guggul (Commiphora mukul), commonly known as Mukul myrrh, is a thorny plant native to India. Botanical extracts from the viscous resin of the plant are widely employed in Ayurvedic and herbal preparations.
Indications
· The most popular use of Guggul extract is for the treatment of high serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Steroid compounds contained with the resin called Guggulsterones are proven to exhibit antioxidant and cholesterol-lowering properties.
· The ability of extracts (Guggulipids) to control lipid levels in the blood have been demonstrated by clinical trials. Guggulipids are frequently used as dietary supplements by those suffering from hyperlipidemia.
· The anti-oxidant properties of Guggul prevent the ‘bad cholesterols’ from binding with free radicals thus reducing the risk of arthrosclerosis. It also prevents clot formation within the arteries and improves cardio-vascular health.
· Guggul in combination with other compounds is known to accelerate weight loss in obese people. The importance of diet control and physical activity however, cannot be undermined.
· The efficacy of Guggul extracts in the treatment of cystic acne is shown to be at par with that of tetracycline.
· It is speculated that Guggul extracts act upon the thyroid gland and help in regulating hormone levels. Research is underway.
· Guggul is also said to provide symptomatic relief in varying degrees in cases of epilepsy and rheumatoid arthritis.
· Regular intake of the herb boosts up immunity functions and protects against infections.
Contraindications
· Intake of Guggul may cause gastric disturbances in some individuals.
· Some people may report an onset of skin rashes.
· Individuals with liver disorders and digestive problems should exercise caution before taking Guggul.
