The Science Behind Dry Skin

Science? What does science have to do with home skin remedies? Believe it or not, all of those natural home remedies that you read about are not based upon mere assumption. In fact, most of them are based upon scientific fact with a little bit of pure old-fashioned common sense thrown in.

You see, back before there were pharmacists, large pharmaceutical laboratories, and doctors in every village there were herbs, plants, and things that simply came from nature. While some of these things had no validity at all, others are still around today…even if they are masquerading as prescription drugs.

The next time that your doctor prescribes a drug for you, take a moment to research the drug. You will find that a large number of prescription drugs are actually based upon the results of natural herbs, plants, and various other natural discoveries…penicillin anyone?

Now that that science question is out of the way, let’s get back to that itchy skin. But first, let’s talk about why your skin becomes itchy during the winter months (it’s a quick explanation, promise).

Why Skin Gets Dry

If you happen to live in a highly populated area, you will notice that your water supply tends to change drastically from season to season. This is largely due to the addition of chlorine to water supplies. As towns and cities attempt to clean the water every season, a whole new batch of chlorine is added.

When it comes down to it, your skin and chlorine just don’t mix. This is one of the main reasons why your skin will become itchy during the winter months, but there are a few more reasons. Environmentally speaking, the air during the wintertime is dry. Thus, the moisture within your skin is sucked out simply by walking out the door.

Another reason for your continued scratching may be your home heating system. Once again, the heat within your home will dry out the air causing your skin to itch. A good solution to this problem is to invest in a humidifier.

Lastly, many of us jump into hot baths at the end of a particularly cold winter’s day (and, let’s face it, most of those days are brutally cold if you live in a cold climate). Well, all of that hot (chlorinated) water can’t help but seep underneath your skin causing it to itch.

Dry Skin Relief

While you could avoid taking showers and baths for the winter season, this is not recommended for the sake of those around you. Instead, consider the following home remedies (remember, they are based upon science).

Moisturize! Purchase a good quality moisturizer, and apply it liberally the moment that you step out of the shower. What constitutes a good moisturizer? Look for one that does not contain a large helping of alcohol. Generally, you will wind up paying more for these magical creams, but they are worth it.

Sip beverages often…well, water, that is. The more water that you consume, the more moisture that your body will retain resulting in blissfully moisturized skin. Once you have attained that healthy glow, make sure to retain it. How? Exfoliate at least once per week using a rough loofah.

Finally, when you step out of the shower avoid drying off your entire body completely. Instead, slap on that moisturizer, allow it to dry naturally, and then get dressed.

In addition to these methods, don’t forget about your diet. Healthy foods go a long way in maintaining glowing skin, you can also take supplements that help prevent and heal dry skin. See how easy it can be to avoid dry winter skin? Now that you are ready for it, that harsh winter air won’t be any trouble at all.
