Essential Oils to Help Sinuses: Learn Which Oils Are Best for Sinus Problems
Sinus Problems
Sinus pressure, pain and a stuffy or runny nose are normally symptoms of a condition called sinusitis. Sinusitis is an inflammation of one or more of the paranasal sinuses often caused by a bacterial or viral infection, or an allergic reaction. Acute episodes can last up to three weeks and chronic episodes can last three to eight weeks or more. Using essential oils to help sinuses is a natural, safe and effective way to many when finding relief.
Essential Oils
An essential oil is a concentrated liquid extracted from the leaves, flowers, stems, bark, roots and other parts of plants. These oils, which are not really oily-feeling, are packed with healing properties and are absorbed into the body either through direct skin contact or inhalation.
Best Essential Oils for Sinus Problems
Eucalyptus
The eucalyptus is an evergreen tree native to Australia. The oil is extracted from the leaves and twigs and has anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antibacterial, antiviral and decongestant properties. It is one of the oldest native remedies used in Australia and is commonly used in inhalants and vapor rubs.
Peppermint
This essential oil is extracted from the flowers of the peppermint plant. It has a fresh “minty” scent and, like eucalyptus, has the ability to decrease inflammation, relieve pain and fight infections. In addition to providing sinus relief, it can uplift one’s spirits.
Rosemary
Rosemary is an evergreen mint that has a strong camphor-like aroma. The oil is extracted from the flowering tops. It has analgesic, antimicrobial, antioxidant and decongestant properties which can greatly benefit sinus problems.

How to Use Essential Oils
There are several ways you can use essential oils for sinus relief:
• In a small, dark glass bottle, add some coarse sea salt and a few drops of oil. When needed, open the bottle and inhale the fumes. You can also place a few drops of oil on a handkerchief and place in a ziplock bag.
• Pour steaming hot water into a bowl, add a few drops of essential oil to the water, lean over the bowl with a towel over your head to trap in the steam and inhale. Be careful to not burn yourself. You can also use a vaporizer - this is a good method when sleeping at night.
• Add a few drops of oil to a hot bath and soak for 15 to 20 minutes.
• Add a few drops of essential oil to a carrier oil (such as olive, sweet almond, jojoba, apricot kernel, grapeseed or coconut) and massage the mixture over the affected area. Be careful to not get it into your eyes.
Do not ingest the oils.
If pregnant, consult with your health care provider before using essential oils to help sinuses.
