Fainting Spells

Fainting occurs when not enough oxygen reaches the brain. When the brain is deprived of oxygen, one loses muscle tone and consciousness, causing them to collapse. Collapse is actually a protective mechanism because it allows more blood to flow to the brain when lying down and, after a brief moment, the person should regain consciousness. However, collapsing can put one in harms way so it is best to know the reasons for fainting, how to prevent fainting spells, know the symptoms of fainting, and what to do when feeling faint.

Reasons for Fainting

Common reasons for fainting spells include:

  • taking a deep breath, pushing down, and not allowing yourself to exhale (for example, during a bowel movement)
  • rising too fast from a sitting or lying position
  • standing for a long period of time with locked knees
  • dehydration
  • hot environment
  • crowded setting
  • hyperventilation
  • emotional distress
  • fear
  • severe pain
  • coughing hard and long
  • alcohol or drug use
  • low blood sugar
  • anemia
  • pregnancy
  • certain medications, such as diuretics, antihypertensives, antidepressants, and decongestants.

Other reasons for fainting can be more serious, such as those related to heart problems or diabetes.

Preventing Fainting Spells

The following can help prevent fainting spells:

  • avoid straining when having a bowel movement and, afterwards, wait a moment before standing up
  • get up slowly after sitting or lying down
  • avoid standing or sitting for a long period of time or at least periodically move your legs or tense your leg muscles
  • stay well hydrated (drink plenty of water and avoid or limit alcohol and caffeine)
  • eat a healthy diet and don’t skip meals
  • avoid hot, crowded spaces
  • be careful when taking a hot shower or bath
  • avoid tight clothing, especially around the neck
  • if hyperventilating, breathe into a paper bag.

If you experience frequent fainting spells, have a medical condition, or taking prescription medications, contact your doctor.

Symptoms of Fainting

Most people experience symptoms before having a fainting spell. Symptoms may include:

  • weakness
  • lightheadedness
  • dizziness
  • warm feeling
  • sweating

What to do When Feeling Faint

  • If you can’t lie down, sit with your head lowered between your knees. After feeling better, sit in an upright position for a few minutes, then slowly stand.
