Use Kundalini Meditation to Improve Your Mental and Physical Health.
Introduction
Kundalini meditation is a way of accessing the “life force” within each person’s physical body. Some people may be alarmed because Kundalini energy is usually symbolized by a coiled serpent. But it’s important to remember that like any person, a snake can do good or evil. A serpent itself is not necessarily a symbol of wicked, just like a person who makes a mistake (called a sin in Judeo-Christian religions) is not “bad” or “evil.”
Overview of Techniques
Numerous Kundalini yoga and/or Kundalini meditation groups have risen across the globe. But it is not necessary to join a formal group to begin accessing the life force within. Using breath power is an amazingly effective way to raise the Kundalini energy. It takes practice (and you may be best served by at least acquiring a related book, DVD or CD) but can be done.
Breath of Fire Overview
The breath of fire is a popular breathing technique in groups and can be practiced at home. However, Kundalini yoga and meditation DVD’s produced by certified teacher Ravi Singh and Ana Brett warn not to practice this technique during a woman’s monthly menstrual cycle. Kundalini yoga teachers in multiple classes at Golden Bridge Yoga in Los Angeles also warned against doing this during one’s menstrual period, which they also call a “moon cycle.”
How to Do Breath of Fire With Your Nose
Breathe in and out quickly using your nose, almost panting like a dog with the quick sniffs. This is said to clear your mind and leave you more receptive to accessing the Kundalini energy, which yoga and meditation teachers typically note is located at the base of the spine.
How to Do Breath of Fire With Your Mouth
You can also use your mouth to do breath of fire, though yoga teachers on DVDs and in person have warned this method of Kundalini meditation may be less effective. Sometimes it may physically hurt to use the nose, so instead purse your lips into an oval shape (almost like the way a fish’s mouth would look.)
Breathe in and out quickly, and this should also resemble a dog’s panting.
Other Breath of Fire Considerations
If you feel dizzy, ill or fatigued, stop the breath of fire. This basic but sometimes challenging method of meditation can be exhausting. It takes work to build up to minutes of this practice. You might only be able to do a little at a time, but every second of this practice is said to purify the blood and mind.
Kundalini Meditation Mantras
If you’re not opposed to using mantras, other methods of Kundalini meditation can be easily accessed. Kundalini classes typically begin with the mantra “ong namo guru dev namo” chanted three times. Others use chants such as “sat nam” and “wahe guru” to help raise the serpent energy and stabilize your mind and body. Numerous CD’s and DVD’s can help you get started with proper pronunciation, like those produced by Singh and Brett or famed Kundalini yogi and singer Snatam Kaur.
