Oranges

Oranges originated in Asia thousands of years ago. It is believed that Christopher Columbus was the one who brought the first orange seeds to the New World in 1493 on his second voyage.

Today, a navel orange tree that was brought from Brazil to California in 1873 still stands tall and still produces fruit.

In the U.S., orange juice is the most popular juice and oranges are the fourth most popular fruit.

Health Benefits of Oranges

Oranges are an excellent source of vitamin C, a very good source of fiber, and a good source of vitamin A, vitamin B1, folate, calcium, and potassium.

Vitamin C

One orange has 116% of the daily recommended value of vitamin C. Vitamin C is an important water-soluble antioxidant that can protect the inside and outside of cells from free radicals. This helps with the prevention of cancer, cholesterol building up in blood vessels, and inflammatory conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and asthma.

Vitamin C also enhances the immune system. This can help prevent illnesses such as colds, sore throats, ear infections, and so much more.

Fiber

One orange has 12.5% of the daily recommended value of fiber. Fiber prevents the natural sugars in oranges from being absorbed too quickly into the blood stream, making it a healthy snack for most diabetics. Fiber can also help lower cholesterol levels, maintain normal bowel function, and protect the colon from cancer-causing chemicals.

Other

Eating oranges or drinking orange juice can also help reduce ones risk of calcium oxalate kidney stones and peptic ulcers.
