Learn the Health Benefits of Brewer's Yeast
Brewer’s Yeast
Brewer’s yeast is a living organism and is classified as a fungus. It is made from Saccharomyces cerevisiae (a one-celled fungus) and is used in making beer. It can also be grown specifically (for example, on sugar beets) to make nutritional supplements.
Benefits
Some of the many health benefits of brewer’s yeast include:
Protein and RNA
Brewer’s yeast is a good source of protein, containing all the essential amino acids our bodies need. It is also a good source of ribonucleic acid (RNA), which may help slow the aging process and prevent age-related diseases.
B Vitamins
Brewer’s yeast is one of the best natural sources of B vitamins, including thiamin (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), pantothenic acid (B5), pyridoxine (B6), biotin (B7), and folic acid (B9). These vitamins provide the body with energy by helping in the breakdown of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. They also help maintain the muscles needed for digestion, support the nervous system, and help keep the liver, skin, eyes, mouth, and hair healthy.
One important B vitamin brewer’s yeast does not have is vitamin B12, which is found almost exclusively in meats and animal products (milk, cheese, eggs). Vegans should be aware of this.
Chromium
Chromium is believed to be effective in treating high blood sugar and may help prevent diabetes in individuals with a family history of diabetes. Studies also suggest it may help decrease bad cholesterol (LDL) levels and raise good cholesterol (HDL) levels.
Glucan
Glucan, a substance derived from brewer’s yeast, can improve wound healing by promoting the growth of capillaries and skin cells. It can also help treat skin disorders like eczema by making a paste (add a few tablespoons of brewer’s yeast with water) and applying it to the affected area (leave it on until it crumbles off).
Precautions
The following precautions should be taken:
- Diabetics and individuals susceptible to yeast infections should consult with their doctor before using.
- People with gout, impaired immune systems, or intestinal diseases should avoid taking.
- Women who are pregnant or nursing wanting to get the health benefits of brewer’s yeast should not exceed 2 tablespoons per day.
