Unani: The Ancient System of Traditional Medicine
Page content

Unani is a traditional mode of medicine that is said to have originated in Greece. It was first advocated by medical philosophers like Hippocrates and Galen. Unani is a popular form of treatment in Asian and Middle Eastern countries, especially in India. The science of Unani was introduced in India by the Muslim invaders and has ever since become an important part of the Indian medical system. The degrees offered by Unani colleges are recognized by the government and graduates are permitted to practice independently as doctors. Physicians trained in Unani are known as “Hakeems”.

The concept of Unani is based upon the balance of the four elements or “humours” of the body namely, phlegm, blood, yellow bile and black bile. According to the Unani belief, all diseases and disorders in the body stem from an imbalance between these elements. For instance, predominance of the blood element leads to volatile temper and irritability; yellow bile makes one choleric; too much phlegm subdues the emotional vigor of an individual and dominance of black bile leads to depression and negative thoughts. A balance between the four elements creates harmony within the body leading to a healthy existence. Unani bears a large semblance to Ayurveda in terms of principles and administration of treatment.

Unani establishes a diagnosis by assessing the pulse, urine and excreta of the patient along with environmental and lifestyle factors. Sleep patterns, body movements and eating habits are also taken into consideration before charting out a treatment plan. In a manner, the Unani system of medicine restores health via psychological counseling, lifestyle changes and internal harmony.

Unani offers treatment through various modes and methods. Some of these are as follows:

Dietotherapy: Some illnesses can be cured by altering the quality and quantity of dietary intake.

Pharmacotherapy: Some ailments may require administration of natural drugs and herbal extracts.

Regimental Therapy: This involves physical procedures like cauterization, diaphoresis, massage, exercise, diuresis etc.

Hydrotherapy: Water is used to cleanse and purge the body of toxins and negative elements.

According to the Unani principle, good health can be maintained by consuming clean, fresh food and water, breathing fresh air and thinking positive thoughts. The system advocates a holistic, all-inclusive approach to health as opposed to the superficial cures administered by conventional medicine. Owing to its natural basis and spiritual aspect, Unani is rapidly gaining popularity in Western countries, although the practice is not very widespread.

Unani system of medicine has been widely criticized by modern science and western medicine. However, it is vastly accepted and followed by the masses- a phenomenon that bears testimony to its substance.
