Clary Sage Overview

Clary Sage essential oil comes from the flowery tips of the plant. It has a light, sweet nutty smell and many cosmetics manufactures use it in their perfumes. This essential oil is popular for health conditions such as depression, muscle tension, PMS symptoms and it may even be an aphrodisiac. Historically, some wine makers may have added it to their cheap wines to improve the flavor.

Fights Depression

Clary Sage can help fight day-to-day depression. Simply release a few drops onto a cotton ball or into a diffuser, close your eyes and breathe deeply. It works well when combined with other relaxation techniques such as abdominal breathing or with a meditation. Some experts claim Clary Sage essential oil can improve meditation and dream states.

If you think your depression is clinical or you feel continuously down for longer than a few days, speak to your care provider.

Relaxes Muscles

Add five or six drops to about half a cup of unscented massage oil and apply to the back and shoulders to quickly relax tense muscles and decrease your stress levels. If possible, have a friend, family member or a professional masseuse give you a full body massage with your Clary Sage massage oil for maximum benefits.

Helps with Sexual Problems

If you or your sexual partner are having problems with your libidos, Clary Sage essential oil is a great aphrodisiac and may improve your sex life. Use it in a diffuser in your bedroom or put a few drops a small bowl filled with hot water to help improve the mood. You could also use Clary Sage in a massage oil and start your love making by giving a massage to your partner.

Aids with Cramps

If you’re experiencing abdominal cramps, try adding several drops of Clary Sage to a massage oil and massage into the belly. You could also try adding a drop or two to a warm compress and applying that to the stomach.

Helps with PMS and Menopausal Symptoms

Clary Sage essential oil contains an ingredient that’s similar to female hormones. Many experts have found that inhaling it, adding it to bath water or rubbing a few drops onto the belly (when mixed 50/50 with a massage oil) can improve PMS and menopausal symptoms and help with menstrual cramping.

However, since Clary Sage essential oil can increase your menstrual flow caution should be used. Consider rubbing it onto the belly only during the last few days of your menstrual cycle. Consult an aromatherapy expert for more information about using Clary Sage during your menstrual cycle.

Warnings

Do not use Clary Sage during pregnancy, particularly in the first trimester as it may cause contractions. Caution should also be used if you drive a car or operate heavy machinery after using Clary Sage since it can have a sedative effect on some people. It also may make alcohol more potent, so avoid using Clary Sage essential oil and drinking alcohol.

Essential oils should never be ingested unless recommended by a care provider. In addition, never apply essential oils directly to the skin without a carrier oil. Caution should be taken with essential oils during pregnancy and if breastfeeding. If you have any serious health condition, please check in with your care provider before using essential oils since they may worsen your condition.
