Anise, also know as Pimpinella anisum, is a member of the Apiaceae family that includes fennel, caraway, cumin, cilantro, dill, and carrots. It has a strong licorice-like flavor and is commonly used to flavor candy, foods, and liqueurs. It is also a wonderful remedy to freshen bad breath.
The seeds (“fruits”) are used medicinally and have been used for many years to treat a number of problems, particularly stomach problems. Constituents include a volatile oil, flavonoids, proteins, fatty acids, sterols, and phenylpropanoids.

Gastrointestinal Problems
In India, anise seeds are often chewed after meals to improve digestion and to freshen breath. As a tea, it is commonly used to treat colic in infants. Anise seeds can also relieve bloating, gas, indigestion, and nausea. It has antispasmodic properties and can benefit those who suffer from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
Respiratory Problems
Anise seeds act as an expectorant and can be helpful in treating spasmodic coughs and whooping cough. Many cough medicines contain anise. It loosens phlegm and is used to relieve congestion from colds and allergies. Other respiratory-related problems that may benefit from anise seeds include asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia, and sinusitis.
Female Problems
Because of its antispasmodic properties, anise seeds can help treat menstrual pain. It is also used by moms who need to increase milk supply. The oil in anise seeds contain anethole, a mildly estrogenic substance, which can help stimulate milk production by raising prolactin levels. One cup a day is recommended when breastfeeding. Preparing Anise Seed Tea
Pour 1 cup of boiling water over 1-2 teaspoons of crushed seeds, cover, steep for 15 minutes, and strain. Add a fresh orange rind to add some extra flavor.
