The guava is a perennial plant (shrubs and small trees) native to Mexico, northern South America, and Central America. There are about 100 species belonging in the myrtle family. They have green foliage, white flowers, and fruits that are produced at the start of summer. At maturity, the guava tree can reach up to 25 feet high.

Aging and Age-Related Diseases

Guava leaves have a high content of antioxidants. Antioxidants can help prevent and repair cell damage from free radicals (oxidants), thus slowing the aging process and reducing ones risk of diseases linked to aging (such as heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, macular degeneration, cataracts, and osteoarthritis).

Gastrointestinal Problems

Guava leaf extracts can inhibit diarrhea caused by bacteria, including Salmonella spp., Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli. It has been effective in stopping diarrhea in individuals with cholera.

A decoction of guava leaves can increase the secretion of digestive enzymes and also help halt vomiting.

Weight Loss

It is believed guava leaves can benefit weight loss by preventing starch from converting into sugar.

Diabetes

Guava leaves have been used as a folk remedy to treat diabetes for many years. It reduces glucose levels in the blood without effecting levels of insulin.

Allergies

Guava leaves have an anti-allergic effect and can inhibit the release of histamine.

Other health benefits of guava leaves include:

• Relieving arthritis pain when made into a paste and applied over the affected area.

• Speeding up the healing process and relieving pain in wounds and sores when the leaves are crushed and applied over the affected area.

• Relieving toothaches when fresh guava leaves are washed and chewed on.

• Soothing a sore throat when made into a decoction and gargled with.

• Healing inflamed gums and mouth sores when made into a decoction and used as a mouthwash.

Controlling cholesterol and blood pressure, treating acne and hangovers, increasing sperm production, and protecting the prostate are also said to be health benefits of guava leaves.
