Damiana

Damiana is a fairly small shrub, about 3-6 feet high, belonging in the family Turneraceae. It is native to Mexico, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean.

The damiana plant has tiny, aromatic flowers that blossom in the summer and are followed by small fruits similar to figs. The leaves (the part used) contain volatile oils, tannins, flavonoids, and other valuable constituents.

Historically, damiana leaf has been used as a general tonic to strengthen and invigorate the body and to enhance lovemaking. It is used as a flavoring in liqueur, commonly made into a tea, and is also an ingredient in herbal cigarettes.

Benefits of Damiana Leaf

Aphrodisiac

It is unknown how damiana leaf works as an aphrodisiac but it is said to stimulate the genital area by increasing the oxygen supply in both men and women. It can help women achieve an orgasm and, in men, it has been helpful in the treatment of long term impotence and premature ejaculation.

According to animal studies, extracts of the damiana leaf improved mating behavior in impotent male rats; however, it had no effect on rats who were sexually potent.

Depression

Damiana leaf is used to help treat mild depression, as well as relieve anxiety and nervousness.

Menstruation

Herbal remedies containing damiana are often recommended to women who have painful periods (dysmenorrhea), delayed periods, or headaches connected to menstruation.

Constipation

Damiana leaf acts as a mild laxative and can help treat persistent constipation caused by poor muscle tone. Large doses of damiana can cause the stools to become considerably loose.

Other benefits include:

  • increasing metabolism
  • suppressing coughs
  • relieving menopausal symptoms
  • treating urinary tract infections
  • helping in the treatment of asthma and bronchitis.
