Fenugreek

Fenugreek is also known as Greek hay because it was used to scent moldy hay. It has a maple-like flavor and, in the U.S., it is used in a low-cost syrup to imitate the more expensive pure maple syrup.

Constituents of fenugreek seeds include protein, mucilaginous fiber, beta carotene, many B vitamins, vitamin C, zinc, magnesium, potassium, sulfur, tryptophan, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), and diosgenin (a phytoestrogen).

Health Benefits of Fenugreek Seeds

Milk Production

Fenugreek seeds are an excellent glactagogue and has been used for centuries to increase milk supply. Normally, women see results in 24-72 hours but in some women it can take a couple of weeks to see a change. Once an appropriate milk supply is achieved, the woman can usually discontinue taking fenugreek seeds without seeing a decrease in supply.

Fenugreek seeds are considered safe for moms who breastfeed when used in moderation. It is on the U.S. FDA Generally Recognized as Safe list.

Recommended dosage is six capsules a day (about 3500 mg). Dosages less than this appear to have no effect.

Child Birth

Fenugreek seeds stimulate contractions and can help induce labor. This should be discussed with your health care provider before using.

Diabetes

Fenugreek seeds are often used to treat diabetes in Ethiopia. In the 1990s, research found that adding fenugreek seeds to the daily diet significantly lowered blood sugars in diabetics. It was also noted to lower HbA1C, triglycerides, and cholesterol. Capsules are better than whole seeds when lowering blood sugar. This should be discussed with your health care provider before using.

Fever

Taking fenugreek seeds with lemon and honey can help reduce a fever. To treat a fever, add 1-2 teaspoons of fenugreek seeds to an herbal tea (like green tea). Drink this tea (with lemon and honey) 3 times a day.

Skin Problems

When applied topically, fenugreek seeds can help treat skin problems, such as eczema, boils, abscesses, and burns. Grind a spoonful of fenugreek seeds into a powder and mix with some warm water to form a paste. Apply directly on the affected area.

Other

Relieving menstrual pain, treating an upset stomach, freshening bad breath, and soothing heartburn are other health benefits of fenugreek seeds.
