Passion Flower Tea: Learn the Health Benefits of Passion Flower
Health Benefits of Passion Flower Tea
The passion flower, according to folklore, got its name because the inner part of the flower resembles the crown of thorns Jesus wore when crucified. It is a perennial climbing vine that can reach 30 feet in length and the flowers vary in color. The stems and leaves are used for medicinal purposes.
The benefits of passion flower tea have been known by the Native Americans for over 200 years. It was used to sedate and calm nerves and is still used today to treat insomnia and anxiety. It is said to be especially helpful in individuals with nervous insomnia (lying in bed all night worrying about everything).
Similar to valerian root, but not as potent, passion flower is believed to work by increasing levels of gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA), a chemical in the brain that relaxes the body. Benzodiazepine drugs, like Valium, have the same effect.
Passion flower contains a chemical, chrysin, that helps produce testosterone and can benefit men who produce excessive amounts of estrogen. However, it can aggravate conditions in men who have an excess of testosterone, including prostate problems and baldness.
Other possible health benefits of passion flower tea include:
