Butcher’s Bloom (Ruscus aculeatus)

Also known as box holly, knee holly, pettigee and sweet broom, this is a common evergreen shrub found from the Middle East to the southern U.S. The shoots of the plant in some ways resemble asparagus. Therapeutic uses of Butcher’s Bloom date back as far as 2,000 years ago. Ruscogenin capsules, taken as directed on the label, can fight fluid retention and improve circulation, which may reduce the reoccurrences of Meniere’s. This supplement should not be used in pregnancy or while nursing.

Goldenseal and Scutellaria (Hydrastis canadensis and Scutellaria lateriflora)

This combination is taken as a tincture using one to one-and-a-half teaspoons of each herb in one-fourth cup of water three times a day. This controls infection and should decrease fluid accumulations in the inner ear. CAUTION: Goldenseal should not be taken for longer than two weeks at a time. Avoid this herb if pregnant, or if you have cardiovascular disease, gallbladder disease or glaucoma. It also should not be taken with Vitamin B6 supplements or protein supplements containing histadine. Scutellaria should not be taken if diarrhea is present.

Siberian ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus)

The root of this plant is the part most commonly used in herbal medicine, although benefits are found in the leaves and berries as well. It functions as an adaptogen, normalizing body functions. One traditional use has been to prevent motion sickness, which shares symptoms with Meniere’s disease. Use the dosage level found on the label in one-fourth cup of water.

Tinnitus

A tincture made with equal parts black cohosh, goldenseal, and gingko taken three times a day using one teaspoon in one-fourth cup of water can help with long-lasting tinnitus if it accompanies Meniere’s disease. An infusion of the same herbs using two teaspoons in one cup of water three times a day is an alternative.

Chinese Herbal Formulations

The Bupleurum Plus Dragon Bone and Oyster Shell Decoction is used for Meniere’s disease if additional symptoms of constipation, agitation or a rapid pulse are present. This formula should not be used if a fever is results.

Five-ingredient Powder with Poria may help if Meniere’s is caused by head trauma or a fever. Related symptoms may include headaches, thirst or urinary problems.

True Warrior Decoction is reputed to treat Meniere’s if cold sensations or problems urinating occur. Stop taking this decoction if a fever results of if a loss of feeling in the mouth and tongue develops.
