Peppermint Tea

Peppermint is a hybrid mint. It is a cross between the spearmint and watermint. It is occasionally found wild with its parent species and is cultivated throughout the world.

Intestinal Problems

Menthol, an active ingredient in peppermint tea, can help treat diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and flatulence. To prevent stomach discomfort, drink a cup of tea after each meal. It was once recommended to treat colic in infants but this should be avoided because menthol can cause a choking sensation in babies and very young children.

Stress

The minty flavor and aroma of peppermint tea can help decrease stress, relieve headaches and promote a good night’s sleep.

Immune System

Peppermint tea contains important nutrients and can help enhance the immune system. This can benefit those suffering from the common cold or flu.

Other health benefits of peppermint tea:

• Gargling with peppermint tea, after it cools down, can help treat a sore throat, hoarseness and laryngitis.

• Inhaling the steam from a hot cup of tea can help clear sinuses.

• Bathing in peppermint tea can help treat skin problems, such as burns and rashes. Add one quart of peppermint tea to your bath water.

Preparing Peppermint Tea

Preparing peppermint tea using fresh peppermint leaves:

  • bring water to a boil
  • let it cool down a bit before pouring it over fresh peppermint leaves
  • cover
  • steep for 7 minutes
  • strain

Preparing peppermint tea using dried peppermint leaves (if you have your own peppermint plant, lay the leaves on a tray and let them dry in the sun for 24-48 hours until they become crunchy):

  • add 2 tablespoons of dried leaves to a cup of hot water
  • cover
  • steep for 10-20 minutes
  • strain

To enjoy the health benefits of peppermint tea even more, add a little honey or freshly squeezed lemon juice to your tea.

To store fresh peppermint, wrap the leaves in a damp paper towel, place in a plastic bag and keep in the refrigerator. This will keep it fresh for a few days.
