Cinnamon Tea

Cinnamon, one of the oldest known spices, is mentioned in the Bible and in one of the earliest Chinese botanical medicine books, dated around 2,700 B.C.

Besides being used for its health benefits and its sweet, warm flavor, cinnamon was also used to preserve meats and as an embalming agent. It was so highly treasured that wars fought over it and it was once considered more valuable than silver and more precious than gold.

Health Benefits of Cinnamon Tea

• Cinnamon tea is a great source of manganese, calcium, and iron. It has a warming effect and improves blood circulation and energy flow to the abdomen. Because of this, digestive organs highly benefit from this natural, herbal remedy. A small amount of cinnamon tea will help relieve gas and a larger amount will help relieve constipation.

• According to researchers at the UGA College of Family and Consumer Sciences, cinnamon lowers blood sugar by slowing the emptying of the stomach which reduces a sudden rise in blood sugar after meals and also improves the effectiveness of insulin. Insulin plays a role in the levels of bad cholesterol so when blood sugar levels are lowered, bad cholesterol levels may also lower.

• Research led by Dr. P. Zoladz and presented at the 2004 annual meeting of the Association for Chemoreception Sciences, found that just smelling cinnamon improved memory.

• Other health benefits of cinnamon tea include gaining weight for those with a loss of appetite, treating colds, and decreasing inflammation in arthritis.
