Natural Antibiotics

Natural antibiotics provide an alternative to conventional antibiotic medicines, which are problematic for two main reasons. First, the use and over-use of synthetic antibiotics has led to an alarming increase in drug-resistant bacteria. Secondly, prescription antibiotics tend to wipe out good bacteria as well as bad. This not only retards the body’s ability to fight back, it also makes room for drug-resistant antibiotics to gain a toehold in the body.

Natural antibiotics, conversely, work with the body’s natural powers to rid it of infection. Certain herbs may be used as antibiotic alternatives and do not cause resistance in bacteria. The secret to this lies in the complexity of plants. While penicillin is simply that, penicillin, plant products contain dozens of different compounds. Garlic, for instance, has 17 amino acids, 33 different sulfur compounds and at least 35 other parts that are not identified. When faced with this complexity, bacteria can not develop a resistance to the herbal antibiotic.

In addition to their complexity, herbs are “smart” in a way that typical antibiotics are not. For example, garlic stimulates the immune system and works against viruses as well as bacterial infections. It also promotes good bacteria culture by working against bad strains. Garlic is effective against Tuberculosis, drug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans, herpes simplex, influenza B and many others.

Examples of natural antibiotics:

  • Aloe is typically used as an external antibiotic salve. It is especially helpful for burn victims, whose wounds are extremely susceptible to infection from Staphylococcus aureus. Aloe also works against herpes simplex 1 and 2. It is prepared simply by opening the thick leaves of the plant and squeezing or scooping out the pulpy liquid, which is then applied to the skin. There are no side effects from external use of natural aloe vera.
  • Grapefruit seed extract is made from the seeds and peel of ripe grapefruit. It is a true antibiotic in the sense that it will destroy good bacteria as well as the bad when taken in high doses. However, like garlic, it is one of the most effective natural antibiotics available and is effective against a large number of microorganisms, including Staphylococcus, influenza A2, measles, organisms that cause stomach ulcers and hundreds of other species.
  • Wormwood leaves are an antibacterial, antimalarial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory herb. Wormwood is used to treat antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections, as well as resistant and regular strains of malaria.

Plant-based herbal remedies have been used as medicine for thousands of years, and are now gaining momentum even where modern medicine has all but eradicated knowledge and practice of the ancient healing arts.

While herbal antibiotics are preferable to modern antibiotics for overall purposes, there are still some cases when conventional antibiotics should be used, such as when loss of life or limb is immanent. However, with a holistic approach to diet, health, prevention and treatment, natural antibiotics offer a wealth of options to every family and health practitioner, even against serious bacterial infections.
