There are a number of healthful and delicious foods that start with N. These foods cross several food groups and offer a wide variety of flavors and textures. The following are some of the great foods available that begin with the letter N.

They may have gotten their name from the U.S. Navy’s frequent use of them, but navy beans are a popular bean used in many dishes including soups, stews and Boston baked beans.A 1-cup serving of cooked navy beans contains 258 calories. These legumes are rich in magnesium, dietary fiber, protein, copper, phosphorus, tryptophan, manganese and folate.

Nectarines

Nectarines have a smooth skin, unlike their fuzzy cousin, the peach. Their flesh is similar in taste and texture, and both have a large pit in the center.

One medium nectarine contains 62 calories, 15 g of carbohydrates, 2 g of protein and is a good source of niacin, potassium, dietary fiber and vitamins A and C.

Though typically in-season from November through May, one variety of navel orange, the Cara Cara, has a season that runs through the winter months.

One medium navel orange contains 80 calories and provides a variety of needed nutrients: vitamin A (2% RDA), vitamin C (130% RDA), calcium (6% RDA), vitamin B6 (4% RDA), riboflavin (4% RDA), thiamin (10% RDA), niacin (2% RDA), vitamin B6 (4% RDA), pantothenic acid (4% RDA), selenium (2% RDA), copper (4% RDA) and manganese (2% RDA).

One medium navel orange also provides 1 g of protein, 19 g of carbohydrates and has 0 fat and cholesterol.

Northern Beans

Northern beans, also known as great Northern beans, are large white beans that are a preferred choice for soups, casseroles and baked dishes. A 1/2-cup serving of cooked northern beans contains 100 calories, 19 g of carbohydrates, 7 g of protein and no fat, cholesterol or sodium. It also provides 6 percent of the RDA for calcium, 2 percent of the RDA for vitamin C and 10 percent of the RDA for iron.

Nutmeg

Nutmeg, a hard, brown seed that grows on trees, is a spice commonly used in baked goods and custards. Although commonly sold in ground form, culinary experts prefer to purchase the whole seed enabling them to use freshly grated nutmeg in their dishes.

One teaspoon of ground nutmeg contains 12 calories, 1 g of carbohydrate, 4 g each of calcium and magnesium, 8 g of potassium and 5 g of phosphorous.
