Proper Food Combining

Studies in nutrition over several decades have proven that certain combinations of foods are digested with greater care and efficiency than others. Proper food combining dictates that the human stomach is not capable of digesting more than one concentrated food at a time. Any food that is neither a fruit nor a vegetable is concentrated.

When fruits are eaten alone, they are easily digested. When they are eaten with other foods, immediately a problem arises; because they tend to remain and ferment in the stomach acid. An exception here is only for citrus fruits and nuts, because citric acid assists in the digestion of nuts. In the case of watermelons it is advisable to eat them alone, and not even mix into fruit salads.

You may be alarmed to learn that certain foods which you have been eating all your life, are not in your best interest; since they put a great burden on the digestive system, create toxic waste in the system, and cause you to lose a great deal of essential energy. How many times have you eaten meat and potatoes together, or fish and rice, eggs and toast? I see your eyebrows raising! Isn’t this normal? Yes, it has been the norm for most people but it is very unhealthy. Why?

These combinations represent protein and starch together. When these two are combined, the digestive juices create a conflicting response and neither of the two foods is digested properly. Neither should two proteins - like meat and milk, for example - be consumed together; they put heavier work on the digestive tract. Different foods are digested differently, so eating these foods together will cause indigestion in addition to toxins and putrefaction of the food. A starch eaten with another starch is acceptable, because starch is not as difficult to break down as protein.

Healthy Food Combination Tips

We wonder why we suffer from gas, bloating and flatulence; or why we put on excess weight, or why we lack energy. Eating a combination of protein and starch, or two proteins in the same meal, is one of the reasons. Here are some healthy tips to avoid incompatible combinations of food in the future, and at the same time improve your health:

  • Eat only one concentrated food at a meal. If you eat meat, do not eat potatoes, rice, noodles, cheese or bread with it.

  • Eat high water-content food with your meat; for example, have broccoli or zucchini or any other vegetable with your steak. You can even add a salad.

  • Have a baked potato with a little raw butter and vegetables like zucchini, string beans, broccoli and a salad.

In other words, have meat with vegetables and salad; and do the same with potatoes, pasta, bread or cheese. It may all sound very challenging for those who were not aware of these facts, because we have been rooted in our particular eating habits all our lives; but if we want to improve our health, remove toxic waste from our bodies and get rid of excess weight, we should experiment with the proper combinations of food.
