Easy Diabetic Desserts: Substitute Food Ingredients in Your Favorite Desserts
Easy Diabetic Desserts
Diabetics have to make many changes in their lifestyles to remain healthy. One of the changes diabetics have to make is changing their eating habits. This can be very difficult for many people because it often means giving up their favorite desserts. This doesn’t have to be the case if alternative food ingredients are used. Diabetic desserts can include many of the great desserts you love if they are prepared with different ingredients.
Desserts
Cakes
Cakes are many people’s favorite desserts but are loaded with sugar. There are many different food ingredients that can be used to make these delicious desserts healthier. One change that can be made to make cakes healthier is to replace the regular sugar with alternative and natural sweeteners. Margarine can also be used instead of butter. A little health trick that many people do not know about it to replace the oil in cakes with unsweetened applesauce. Use the applesauce in the same amount that the recipe called for with oil. When frosting the cake, choose fat free frosting and only cover the cake lightly with it or whipped cream can even be used in its place.
Cookies
Cookies are not only a great snack, but a great dessert as well. Unfortunately, they are very unhealthy. There are many different ingredients that can be used in cookie recipes to make cookies healthier. Oatmeal cookies can be a little healthier than others. As with the cakes, applesauce can be used in cookies as well. Simply change the amount of oil required in the recipe with unsweetened applesauce. Sugar alternatives can be used instead of regular sugar. Instead of using candy morsels in the cookies, replace them with raisins or cranberries for a healthy treat. Margarine can replace the butter needed in the cookies as well.
Other Desserts
Another dessert that is healthier for diabetics is fresh fruit and yogurt. Use plain or flavored fat free yogurt. The yogurt can be mixed with fresh fruit like blue berries or diced strawberries. Granola or chopped nuts can be added to the yogurt for an added crunch. This is not only a great dessert, but perfect for a small snack as well. Many different fruits can be added to the yogurt besides berries like grapes or chopped melons.
