Mangoes are enjoyed by many during the summer months when they are abundant and plenty. Mango shakes, mango salads or eating them as is will satisfy everyone’s taste buds. However, not many people are aware of the health benefits of mangoes. So what are the benefits of eating mangoes?

Mangoes, An Anti-Cancer Fruit

Recent studies suggest that mangoes have properties that are very effective in fighting against cancer cells. The research conducted by the Texas Agrilife Research showed that mangoes had a positive effect in battling lung, leukemia, and prostate cancers but is most potent in fighting against common breast and colon cancers.

The polyphenols particularly the gallotannins in mangoes were found to inhibit the mutation of cancer cells for breast and colon cancers. Furthermore, the study showed that the polyphenols in mangoes destroys the cancers cells without doing damage to the healthy ones.

Dr. Susanne Talcott, who conducted the study together with her husband Dr. Steve Talcott, said, “If you look at it from the physiological and nutritional standpoint, taking everything together, it would be a high-ranking super food; it would be good to include mangoes as part of the regular diet.”

Promotes Eye Health

By eating just one cup of mango a day, you get 25 percent of your recommended dietary allowance of vitamin A. This contributes to optimum eye health. Furthermore, mangoes are known to prevent night blindness, allergies of the eyes such as dryness, itching and burning, and softening of the cornea.

Mangoes and Vitamin C

According to Dr. Martin Hirte, a German pediatrician and health food researcher, mangoes contain more vitamin C when compared to that of an apple or an orange. Vitamin C, of course, helps in boosting your immune system to fight common illnesses such as colds and flu.

The vitamin C content of mangoes also helps to reduce stress levels. It is an essential nutrient that your body needs for the development and growth of body tissues and has been known to espedite wound healing.

The vitamins E and C in mangoes together help to promote healthy and youthful looking skin. In some countries, an application of mango pulps on the face is said to reduce skin problems and relieve clogged pores.
