Pie is…delicious perfection! In fact, if I could enjoy pie without the guilt I would eat it every chance I could…but what is it about pie that makes it so satisfying? Is it the fabulous tart fruity filling, warm and flavorful with chunks of bright apples, or peaches perfection? That smell of cinnamon wafting through the kitchen as only fresh baked goodness can bring? Perhaps it is that creamy smooth chocolate that is equal to consuming a little bit of heaven with each morsel? Whatever your pleasure, there is a way to enjoy it without the guilt!
Sugar Free Options
Nowadays, sugar-free pie fillings offer a reduced carb alternative to standard prepared pie fillings. The downside is they also often contain Sucralose or Splenda which some believe may cause headaches. There is a third option - make your own. It’s fast, easy and delicious!
Homemade Recipe
For fruited filling simply choose the fruit of your choice, apples, peaches, pears, or a combination of similar textures of fruit. Cut into pieces of similar size and place in a pan sprayed with cooking spray. Sprinkle with cinnamon and a little maple syrup and bake in the oven until desired tenderness. You will have a juice that develops as a result of baking the fruit. Don’t worry! It can be saved and enjoyed cold as a yummy beverage! Drain fruit and place in airtight container. Now the fun part: simply place the fruit in a bowl, sprinkle on some animal cracker pieces, almonds and add a dollop of lite whipped cream and oh my! What a taste treat!
Dessert for Breakfast?
Millions of Americans are having dessert for breakfast and feeling guilty. Pastries, donuts, fruit tarts, we’ve grown up on them. How about if you could enjoy giving these to your family guilt free? It’s easy! Make crustless breakfast pies for a healthy morning treat!
Spread some of the fruit filling on a graham cracker and top with some oats and cinnamon. High energy and fiber from these ingredients equal a great way to start your day! Mix it up by omitting the graham cracker and placing the fruit, oats and cinnamon in a bowl with your favorite yogurt and you have added some fabulous calcium and active cultures to your high energy breakfast! What a great way to start your day!
