Benefits of Physical Fitness

Many of us are aware that physical fitness has numerous benefits for optimal physical health and mental health; however, still many of us continue to follow a sedentary lifestyle. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 36% of people do not participate in leisure time activities.

What if there was more evidence to help support the numerous benefits that physical fitness provides? This is when having statistics on physical fitness comes in handy. When people see with their own eyes just how beneficial fitness is and how it can prevent certain illnesses, they may just be more apt to follow a regular fitness regime.

The latest data and statistics on physical fitness according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, “Research has demonstrated that virtually all individuals can benefit from regular physical activity, whether they participate in vigorous exercise or some type of moderate health-enhancing physical activity.”

This information also pertains to older adults. Often the elderly population is hesitant about participating in fitness activities. What is the reason for this insecurity? They are afraid of falling and sustaining a serious injury. However, what older people need to realize, is that by incorporating physical fitness into their daily routine, they will improve their cardiovascular health, and the conditioning of their muscles.

  • Participating in physical fitness activities for up to 7 hours a week, lowers one’s risk of an early death by 40%, compared to people who are less active.

  • Type II Diabetes and Weight Loss- When overweight people lose up to 5-7% of their total body weight; they dramatically decrease their chances of developing type II diabetes.

  • Obesity- According to the American Cancer Society web site, “Obesity and physical inactivity may account for 25 to 30% of several major cancers, including colon, post- menopausal breast, endometrial, kidney, and cancer of the esophagus.”

  • Depression- According to Web MD, in the article, “Serotonin and Depression,” “Exercise can do a lot to improve your mood – and across the board, studies have shown that regular exercise can be as effective a treatment for depression as antidepressant medication or psychotherapy.”

Just Do It!

After seeing the countless benefits and statistics on physical fitness, it makes you wonder why more people don’t participate in more activities? Whether it’s playing sports, going for a walk or taking a new dance class, it is of utmost importance to find activities you enjoy doing and that you will stick with. It’s time to take action and change those bad habits. Even if it means doing 10 minutes of exercise at a time, find time to do it. Doing so can help you in the prevention of various types of physical and mental diseases.
