Jillian Michaels’ 30 Day Shred

Jillian Michaels released her 30 Day Shred DVD workout in 2007. The DVD consists of three twenty minute circuit routines, each led by Jillian Michaels herself. The exercise routines are designed to help you burn fat and sculpt muscle at the same time.

Each level is more intense than the next, and while the program is marketed as one for advanced fitness enthusiasts, one can start at the intermediate level and work up to the advanced level.

Within each level are three cycles, each one beginning with three minutes of strength training. Next, each level moves to cardio and then to abdominal workouts. Immediately following the first cycle, you move to the next with no rest. These cycles are what make the exercise programs “circuit” routines.

For best results, be sure to have three to five pound dumbbells available when you start your workout. If you don’t have those available, using canned veggies or soup can work in a pinch. The DVD also offers the option to turn off the music.

The Reviews Are In

While there are always going to be some dissatisfied customers, most of the reviews of Jillian Michaels’ 30 Day Shred are glowing. People find Michaels surprisingly “supportive,” which helps them to stay motivated to continue the workout. Plus, they say, the workouts are intense but not painful—a perfect combination.

“Usually her type of personality turns me off but she is very precise in her cueing and she does do a great job with the entire set up of the DVD,” said one reviewer.

“What I like best is it’s under 25 minutes so I can do it start-to-finish three times a week without necessarily needing to go to the gym at the crack of dawn,” said another.

About Jillian Michaels

Personal trainer Jillian Michaels is best known for her intrinsic role in NBC’s The Biggest Loser, in both the American and Australian versions of the show.

Michaels says that she was an overweight teen, tipping the scales at 175 pounds at one point. Her big turning point was when her mother signed her up for a martial arts class. As she got healthier, she realized that she wanted to help other overweight people to do the same.
