The adrenal glands sit on top of the kidneys. Their chief function is to deal with stress by releasing hormones, including epinephrine and adrenaline. When the gland or glands, malfunction, they can release too much of these into the system, putting the body on a stimulus overload which is dangerous to the heart and the rest of the body. If they do not release the necessary hormones, the body will be in distress as well. Interestingly, the glands are affected directly by stress and the symptoms of malfunction of this gland appear to cause undue stress to the body as well. This is why adrenal glands are closely related to exhaustion.

Causes of Adrenal Gland Malfunction

The adrenal glands are very sensitive to stress. Malfunction may be due to an overload of stress or fear. A diet of fatty foods can exacerbate the problem. Another source of stress to this gland is illness such as Candida yeast infection, which places stress directly on the adrenal gland. To prevent adrenal gland issues, it is recommended that a person maintain a healthy diet, get enough sleep on a regular basis and avoid stress when at all possible. Adrenal gland malfunction can also be due to physical stimulation, such as consumption of caffeine. Poor diet choices can lead to problems because the adrenal gland is partially responsible for controlling blood sugar and the gland becomes exhausted if called upon to work too hard due to poor diet.

Symptoms of Adrenal Gland Malfunction

The general term for adrenal gland malfunction symptoms is “adrenal exhaustion.” Symptoms may include constant fatigue and exhaustion, loss of appetite, non-restful sleep, low stamina and difficulty concentrating. Symptoms of adrenal gland malfunction can also include PMS, consistent low blood pressure, poor digestion and headaches. All of these may be related to stress, without the individual actually considering the physiological cause. If presented with a number of these symptoms, a person should seek medical attention and do his/her best to avoid stress and seek out a calm and soothing environment.

Treatment for Adrenal Gland Malfunction

An individual suffering from symptoms of adrenal gland malfunction does have options for treatment besides trying to avoid stress. Herbs such as licorice root and Siberian ginseng are recommended and health food stores even carry an adrenal gland extract. These three treatments mimic the actual hormones usually released by the gland. B-5 supplements have also been helpful to some patients with adrenal gland malfunction.

In addition to herbal or vitamin supplements, it is recommended that the individual consider meditation or relaxation therapy to try to control the functions of their adrenal glands. If these strategies are unsuccessful, the individual may want to consider an underlying issue, such as a yeast infection or exposure to certain kinds of molds.
