The Best Diet Beverages: What You Should Drink to Lose Weight
Page content

The beverages you drink when dieting are just as important as the foods that you consume; you need low calorie beverages that are healthy for you, and your diet beverages will need to help you remain hydrated. There are some excellent diet beverages that you can choose from, and you should refrain from certain diet beverages that are not so good for you or your health. Let’s examine the differences between water, fruit juice, vegetable juice, and diet colas to determine which diet beverages are best for you while dieting to lose weight.

Water

Plain tap water or store bought water can be the best of all diet beverages to choose when you are looking to lose weight. Water has no calories and it contains minerals your body needs to remain healthy. Water helps you detoxify your body, flush your system, and clear out any accumulated toxins that you might have in your body via the process of sweating and urination. Water, when consumed at a rate of 8 to 10 eight ounce glasses daily, will give you a full feeling in your belly and will diminish your appetite considerably. Water also increases your metabolic processes too; 10 minutes after you drink 16 ounces of water your metabolic rate rises, and 30 minutes after consuming 16 ounces of water your metabolic processes can increase as much as 30 percent or more. The increased metabolic rate lasts just over an hour’s time and helps your body burn more calories naturally.

When you consume water, you can burn off an additional 35,000 calories per year. This means that daily water consumption can lead to the loss of 10 pounds per year. You should not consume too much water though, since excessive amounts of water can lead to water toxicity. No more than 12 glasses of water are recommended a day, and the water you drink should be cold or cool water. When the water is cold, your body has to work harder to warm the water and process it in your body: this is part of what helps your metabolic processes to increase.

Fruit Juices

If you are juicing, then fruit juices are a nice diet beverage, provided you consume them in moderation. Fruit juices are very high in sugar content, so you should keep your fruit juice selections to a minimum when you are dieting. If you are going to consume fruit at all, it is better to eat the raw fruit than to juice it: you get a great source of fiber which helps to keep your intestinal tract and bowel movements regulated. When fruit is juiced, it loses a lot of its fibrous content while maintaining a lot of unwanted sugars. For the diabetic, consuming too much fruit juice can have a harmful and unhealthy affect on blood glucose levels.

Vegetable Juice

When looking for diet beverages, vegetable juice offers you great benefits over fruit juice selections. First, in most instances, the consumption of vegetables in juice form does not elevate your glucose or insulin levels. The only kinds of vegetable juices that do affect your insulin levels are vegetable juices made out of beets and carrots. Vegetable juices like low sodium V8 juice (a 100% vegetable juice product) consumed at a rate of 1 to 2 eight ounce cups daily can help you lose weight: as much as 4 pounds in a 12 week period. Vegetable juices are filling, will help diminish your appetite, and they are an excellent source of vitamins and minerals.

Diet Colas and Other Diet Sodas

Just because the soda can tells you that diet sodas give you no calories when they are consumed, it does not mean that the colas are good for your health. Many of today’s colas are made with aspartame to give it a sweet flavor, but the consumption of aspartame has serious side effects including bodily aches, pains, cramping, and some people have anxiety related issues after its consumption. Excessive consumption of aspartame containing colas and sodas may alter your mood, and if you are an “emotional eater,” or person that binge eats when emotions trigger such a habit, you may actually destroy your ability to remain dedicated to your dieting plan. You should make wise diet beverage selections and opt for water or vegetable juices when dieting for greater dieting success.
