One of the reasons that people consume more calories then they burn in a day is because of the portion size of the food they eat. Most people eat two to three servings of an item. They believe this to be a single serving. The public has been programmed to believe that more is better when it comes to food. We are the society that believes super-sizing is normal. To lose weight and be healthy, you need to eat the proper portion size of food.

    For many, the idea of remembering what a correct portion size of food seems to be a daunting task. Controlling the sizes of the portions that you consume does not need to be hard. There are a few simple tricks that you can implement to make sure that you cut down your portion sizes. By following these tricks, you will find that portion control and weight loss are easy to achieve.

    The first trick is to stop using the dinner plates that you have. Dinner plates are too large to give you a good idea of the portion size of the food that you consume. It is better to eat off of smaller plates to lose weight. A good plate size to use to make sure that you keep your portions small is a salad plate. By limiting yourself to the size of your salad plate, you will be forced to eat less food over the course of your meal.

    The second trick to portion control is knowing the serving size of proteins. This would be the lean protein like chicken or turkey that you eat during a meal. There is an easy mental trick for you to see at a glance if the portion size of your protein is correct to help you to lose weight. A single serving of protein is about three ounces. This is about the size of a deck of playing cards. So picture a deck of playing cards when you sit down to your next meal to make sure that you do not eat too much.

    The third trick is to know at a glance a single cup serving size. Most foods that you eat through out your day should be consumed in only a single cup size. This includes many of your carbohydrates and vegetables that you eat. To lose weight, you need to know this simple measurement at a glance. Get yourself a set of measuring cups. Look at the one cup size of the measuring cups and get a good idea of how big it really is. With this knowledge, you will be able to control the portion size of just about every food that you would want to eat.
